Silver Peak bolsters virtual WAN optimization software

Silver Peak today upgraded the software for its WAN appliance to handle automated optimization for TCP and non-TCP traffic, 512,000 simultaneous connections for 10 gigabit-per-second (Gbps) infrastructures and support for a bunch of common hypervisors.

The upgraded software, Virtual Acceleration Open Architecture (VXOA) 5.2, runs the company's NX-10K WAN optimization appliance. With the growing popularity of big data and virtualization management frameworks -- many of which don't use standard TCP -- prompted the company to introduce an automatic optimization feature for protocols like OVT and UDT. These tunneled formats can now be managed and optimized without any input from the user.

The new software now incorporates support for Citrix XenServer and Linux KVM, Silver Peak says, should create additional flexibility for users of those hypervisors. VXOA already supported VMware vSphere and Microsoft Hyper-V.

Silver Peak, which recently announced that it had expanded an existing partnership with Dell, also began offering free trials of many of its products several months ago.

The advent of increasingly complex network architectures -- along with staggering growth in the amount of data that they must handle -- has prompted a concomitant rise in the amount of products designed to maximize available network resources. Despite similar terminology, many of those offerings are designed to accomplish a wide array of different tasks. "Optimization" products range from DPI technology to WAN optimization to management and visibility tools aimed at various parts of the IT stack.
