Senator Kate Lundy, the federal minister assisting for innovation and industry, has been announced as a keynote speaker at Australia's first DrupalCon, which will be held in February next year.

Lundy's keynote address is titled 'From Open Source to Open Government'. A statement issued by the Drupal Association said that "Senator Lundy is a powerful advocate inside government for the use of the Internet, digital technology and ICT innovation. She participated in every Senate Inquiry relating to telecommunications and Information Technology over fifteen years, and spearheaded Gov 2.0 initiatives such as Public Sphere events to facilitate online public collaboration on policy development."

Along with higher education, government has been one of the fastest growing markets for Drupal, a popular open source content management system.

Noteworthy deployments include Whitehouse.gov and a number of US government departments, including energy and education, and in Australia it has been used for more than 100 state, federal and local government sites, including by the Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations; the Department of Familes, Housing, Community Services and Indigenous Affairs; the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet; and the Department of Families, Housing, Community Services and Indigenous Affairs.

Earlier this year, local Drupal shop PreviousNext released aGov, a Drupal distribution targeting Australian government agencies seeking to comply with AGIMO's mandatory Web requirements.

The day one DrupalCon Sydney keynote will be delivered Drupal creator Dries Buytaert.

DrupalCon Sydney 2013, which will be held in Coogee, 6-9 February 2013, has the theme "Growing Drupal Downunder" and will bring together users and developers of the CMS.

The conference comes in the wake of the locally organised 2011 and 2012 Drupal Downunder conferences. It will be held under the aegis of the Drupal Assocation.
